Nachkommen May 25, 2006
Posted by Daniel in : Projects , add a commentNachkommen is an animated short that Heiko Scherm wasworking on. He made this movie as part of his diploma. The story is about two orchids that are standing in an old, dark, crooked but fabulous forest.
I asked him if he needed someone to create that forest, he did. And so her i am presenting my work on Nachkommen.
After trying to build the trees using particles in XSI …
I switched to maya and wrote a kind of geometry-instancing script …

After some time i recognized that the resulting trees would all appear too similar. So i decided to write another script that takes either circles or predefined shape-curves, then duplicates them and creates branches by lofting these curves …

(Clip - 5.3 MB)
To make the tree creation faster, i converted the script into a maya plugin. Then I had the idee to use some algorithms that are used in flocking systems to make the branch growth more realistic …
There will be more renderings later. I spent more time coding it than using it. Heiko Scherm is currently working with it and i’m keen to see his results.
